Top Methods to Keep Ceiling Insulation in Place

The insulation in your ceiling plays a key role in your home's comfort and energy consumption. Ideally, it should sit snugly between the ceiling joists. But many homeowners notice their insulation drooping or falling long before it's time to replace it, especially if they installed it themselves.

Keeping your ceiling insulation in place can feel like a constant battle with gravity. These simple strategies will help you gain the advantage in the struggle to keep your ceiling insulation in place.

Secure Ceiling Insulation with Metal Insulation Hangars

Metal insulation hangars are meant to provide additional support for your insulation between the ceiling joists and come in many different sizes. As useful as they are, it's important to use them sparingly and strategically. Otherwise, you risk compressing the insulation and decreasing its effectiveness.

Save Money with Nylon Straps

Nylon straps are a budget-friendly solution to falling insulation and can easily be cut to precise lengths. They’re used similarly to hangars — you can strap them onto the rafters or joists to provide support in weak spots to keep the insulation in place.

Use Mesh Netting or Chicken Wire to Cover the Most Surface Area

If a few well-placed straps won't do, you can cover broader areas using mesh netting or chicken wire. Both options provide maximum support and an attractive finish but can be tricky to install.

When to Call Professional Insulation Contractors

Before working with any insulation, you should always gear up with the proper protective equipment, including safety goggles, earmuffs, gloves, respiratory mask, and long-sleeved clothing. If you don't have these materials on hand or simply don't want to bother with delicate and risky insulation work, it's best to leave it to the professionals.

Also, if you notice any mold or wet insulation while inspecting your attic, it's time to call in the pros.
